Westmont borders Darien on the north, and the drive from our Lemont Rd base is usually about 14 minutes (about 6 miles). The emergency line at (630) 822-9290 is open 24/7. Overflowing toilets, faucets stuck open, burst pipes and basement water all get priority.
If a toilet is overflowing, lift the tank lid and press the flapper down, or close the stop valve behind the bowl by turning it clockwise. For any water you cannot stop, close the main. Keep power off near standing water.
Westmont calls that go to the front of the line
Not every fixture issue is an emergency, but these are.
- An overflowing toiletClose the stop valve and stop flushing. If the bowl and the tub both bubble, the main line is involved.
- A faucet or shutoff that will not closeWhen the stop valve under a sink is stuck open, close the main and call.
- Water coming through a basement wall or floorShut off the main if a pipe is the source. Call even if it only seems rain-related.
- Gas smellLeave and call 911 or the gas utility. We do not work on a suspected gas leak.
A slow drip is a regular visit. Tell dispatch what you have.
Westmont's flood years and your basement
The Village of Westmont's own 2015 stormwater presentation lists a devastating flood in 2008 and historic flooding across northern Illinois in April 2013. Voters then passed a sales tax referendum on April 7, 2015, and collection began July 1, 2015, to pay for stormwater projects.
Village projects reduce street flooding but cannot stop water finding its way into a home. A sump pump on a battery backup, a clear discharge line and a working floor drain trap protect a basement. See sump pump repair and basement waterproofing.
Where Westmont sits relative to our shop
Village offices are at 31 W. Quincy Street, open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Ogden Avenue (U.S. 34) crosses the village. Our base at 7879 Lemont Rd in Darien is about 6 miles south and west of central Westmont.
Toilet and faucet problems at a glance
Most Westmont fixture calls follow familiar patterns.
| Symptom | Likely cause | What we check |
|---|---|---|
| Toilet runs constantly | Worn flapper or fill valve | Replace the parts, see toilet repair |
| Toilet rocks or leaks at the base | Failed wax ring or loose flange | Reset the toilet |
| Faucet drips from the spout | Worn cartridge or seat | Repair per faucet repair |
| Water at the cabinet under the sink | Supply line or trap | Replace the line and test |
| Low flow at one tap | Clogged aerator or valve | Clean or replace |
This is a guide, not a diagnosis.
Downtown Westmont and the sewers under it
The Downers Grove Sanitary District reports it completed sanitary sewer replacement in downtown Westmont in July 2016, including mainlines and building service pipes in the alleys. The Village then put in stormwater drainage and pervious paving there. The Village also says it built the first pervious concrete road in Illinois.
For a downtown shop or older home near those alleys, that means the public side may be newer than the private pipe inside. A backup is therefore often a problem within the building, which a camera shows. Our sewer camera inspection page explains what you will see. The District's sewer line is (630) 969-0664.
Shutoff valves worth finding before a leak
Every Westmont home has several valves that stop water fast. The main sits near the meter. Each toilet has a stop valve on the wall or floor behind the bowl, and each sink usually has two small valves under the cabinet. Water heaters have a cold supply valve on top of the tank.
Test each one once a year by turning it gently closed and open. A valve that will not move, or that drips at the stem afterward, is a repair to book on a calm day. Do not force a stuck valve. A snapped stem during an emergency turns a small leak into a flood.
A pre-storm basement checklist
Given the Village's flood history, a short checklist before heavy rain is worth the time. Pour a bucket of water into the sump pit and watch the pump start, run and shut off. Confirm the discharge pipe is open at the outlet and points away from the house.
Check that the floor drain trap still holds water, since a dry trap lets sewer gas up. Keep valuables off the slab, and know where your main shutoff is. If the pump hums but does not move water, call us before the storm arrives, not during it.
